Taking calls now
Have these ready when you call
Which hospital and which floor Where they are going Wheeled out or walking out
The timing problem

Nobody actually leaves at the time they were told

You will be given a discharge time. It will move. Everyone who has been through this knows it, and a transportation service that has not planned for it will make your day worse.

A typical discharge day
What you were told 11:00 AM When you actually left 2:40 PM Nearly 4 hours later
What usually goes wrong The van is booked for 11:00. Discharge slips to 2:00 because paperwork is pending or a doctor has not signed off. Now you are paying for wait time, or the driver left and you are starting over.
What we do instead Give us the window rather than a single time. Call when the nurse actually hands over the paperwork, and we come then.
Why we can Because we are small and local, and because dispatch is a person rather than an app. Someone here knows your name is on the board today.

The stated discharge time is a guess. Your ride should not depend on that guess being right.

Who calls us

Whether you are family or staff, it is the same number

Most discharge calls come from one of two people, and both get through to the same person.

Ohana driver meeting a family at a hospital entrance If you are family
You may have found out an hour ago Tell us the hospital, the floor, and whether your parent will be in a wheelchair or walking out, and we will tell you straight whether we can cover it today.

Ohana van at a hospital discharge bay If you are discharge staff
You reach dispatch, not a queue Give us the patient, the destination, the load type, and the window, and we confirm or we tell you no. We would rather turn a trip down than take one we cannot cover.

Where we take people

Home is only one of the places we go

A discharge ends somewhere different for everyone. All of these are normal work for us.

Pickup The hospital
Destination
Ohana van arriving at a home after a hospital stay Most common
Destination 01 of 05
Home The one where door through door matters most. Your driver walks you inside, not to the porch. If you are coming home to stairs or a chair you have not used in a week, that walk is the part that counts.
Which van we send

Tell us how they are leaving the room

This is the one detail that matters most on a discharge, and it is the one people most often get wrong.

Ask the nurse Are they being wheeled out because they cannot walk, or because it is hospital policy?
Send wheelchair service Rear entry ramp and four point floor securement, and they stay in their own chair the whole way. No transferring at either end, which after a hospital stay is the last thing anyone wants.
Worth knowing Hospitals wheel patients to the exit as policy, which is why families often book a wheelchair van they do not need and pay more than they had to. Asking the nurse one question can change which service you book.
